Blackduck Baseball Update

The Blackduck Drakes baseball team improved to 15-3 on the season. BHS captured the North Division title of the Northland Conference with a 10-5 victory over the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs May 10.

The division championship qualifies the Drakes to face Southern Division champion Pine River May 21 in Pine River for the outright championship.

This is the third straight season the Drakes have qualified. The drakes won the 2010 conference title game and fell in the title game last season. Both years, BHS faced the Cass Lake Panthers.

May 10, the Drakes traveled to Kelliher to face the Mustangs.

The game was tightly contested until the seventh inning when Blackduck erupted for six runs.

Cody Berquist went the distance to record his fourth win of the season. The senior hurler struggled with a tight strike zone but managed to keep the Mustangs in check most of the game. Berquist, Aaron Nissen, Shane Fenske and Trey Volk each contributed a pair of hits in the winning effort.

On May 14, BHS traveled to Pine River, dropping the contest, 6-3.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two frames. The Drakes scored three times in the third but got no closer. The Tigers added two insurance runs in the fourth inning on a successful bases loaded squeeze play.

Dylan Weisert took the loss, his first of the season. BHS managed just four hits. Nissen's two out double in the third was the Drakes best base hit of the game.

May 15, the Drakes hosted the WHA Wolves in a doubleheader. The Drakes swept the Wolves right out of town, winning 3-1 in the opener and 13-1 in the nightcap.

Nissen dominated on the mound, tossing a complete one hitter in the first game. He faced just two batters over the minimum while striking out 13. He also recorded one put out and four assists.

BHS broke a scoreless game open in the fifth, scoring three runs.

Weisert and Luke Krabbenhoft drove in runs with solid singles through the infield.

In the second game, Trey Volk and Matt Patch combined on the hill for the Drakes' win, each striking out three hitters.

The Drakes erupted for eight hits and benefitted from loose Walker defense to pull away early and end the game after five innings.

Volk led the hitting barrage with a pair of doubles. Krabbenhoft recorded 4 RBI in the game.

The Drakes next contest n Pine River is May 21, in the Northland Conference championship game.

Blackduck's final regular season home game is May 22 against Cass Lake. At this game, the Drakes will recognize graduating seniors and their parents.

BHS wraps up the regular season May 24 when they travel to Deer River to face the number four rated team in the state. Subsection action begins May 29.
