Girls 4x400 team posts best time in the state

BRAINERD - The Hamline Elite track and field meet is Friday and only the top nine athletes and relay teams in Minnesota will qualify for that competition.

Tuesday at the Brainerd Triangular the Bemidji's girls 4x400 relay unit entered the meet with the sole goal of earning a berth at Hamline.

"These girls are driven. If there is someone in front of them they want to catch up. And if they are ahead they want to widen the gap," said BHS girls coach Chris Lehman.

At Tuesday's meet Lehman inserted Claire Laakso, Megan Serratore, Jenna Truedson and Maea Wall into the 4x400 relay team because he felt this group had the best chance of qualifying for Hamline.

"We stacked the relay to see just how fast we can be," Lehman said.

The quartet surprised even themselves by posting a time of 4:03.13 and missing the BHS school record by 1.1 seconds. More importantly, the relay team posted the fastest time so far among Minnesota high school track teams and will be among the favorites at the Hamline meet.

"It was an awesome race," Lehman said. "We didn't have anybody near us but still we ran a 4:03. That time, as far as we can tell, is the fastest time in the state and is two seconds ahead of Hopkins which previously held the best time."

Bemidji was missing some of its athletes Tuesday and finished third as a team with 184.5 points. Sartell won with 286 and Brainerd was second with 200.5.

"We had a very good day," Lehman said. "In the 4x400 the girls made a statement that we are a team to reckon with. And we also did very well in the other events."

Joining the relay team as event winners were Amy Carey who captured the 200 and Allie Heifort who won the shot put (35-9.5) and the discus (126-9).

Bemidji's 4x200 relay unit of Carey, Nicole Hendrickson, Rachel Becker and Josie Spry also was a winner with a time of 1:53.18.

In the boys meet the Jacks also placed third with 107 points. The lone individual victory came in the 4x400 where Nick Gubbels, Gunnar Nelson, Tyler Guest and Scott Hulsebus combined for a time of 3:30.13.

Tanner Phillis added a third in the 110 hurdles (16.70).
