Bemidji High School boys tennis team tops East Grand Forks

EAST GRAND FORKS - Adam Holter, Craig Lindseth and Bemidji boys tennis coach Mark Fodness all celebrated their birthdays Thursday with a 5-2 victory.

"It seems that each year we play on our birthdays," the coach said. "And there is pressure that day because we can't lose that birthday meet."

Holter contributed to the team birthday present by combining with Kyle Fodness for a decisive 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory at first doubles Lindseth wanted to do his part in the team victory but the senior isn't fully recovered from a MCL injury and the decision was made to rest him one more match.

BHS also claimed the other doubles matches as Zach Hewitt and Austin Korczak posted a 6-3, 6-1 win and Jack Boyer and Tim Paulus prevailed 6-2, 6-1.

Capturing singles wins were Isak Sommer at third (6-2, 6-1) and Noah Holter at fourth (6-0, 6-1).

"This was a very good East Grand Forks team," Fodness said, "but during practice on Wednesday we stressed playing tougher as individuals and as a team.

"And I could see that we definitely picked up our toughness. There was more purpose to our shots in all of the matches and everybody had the right approach to every shot," Fodness added.

A key decision in the team victory was provided by Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness.

The pair dropped the first set 2-6 but dominated the rest of the action, posting 6-0 and 6-2 wins.

"That was a swing match," the coach said. "Kyle and Adam dominated the second and third sets and played impressive tennis."

The Lumberjacks are off until Tuesday when they continue their road swing at Detroit Lakes.
