Bemidji boys split 2 matches

The Bemidji High School boys tennis team split its two contests with Park Rapids and Grand Rapids Thursday at the BHS tennis courts.

The Lumberjacks lost to Grand Rapids 5-2 and defeated Park Rapids 7-0.

"Grand Rapids is a really solid team," Bemidji coach Mark Fodness said. "We knew it was going to be a battle either way. We won a couple really close matches, and we lost some close ones. Even in the matchups that didn't appear to be that close, there was some good tennis being played."

Matt Hokanson and Noah Holter were the only Lumberjacks to win in the contest with Grand Rapids. They each one a singles match in two sets.

"It was nice to see two of our young starters both win matches that went into a tiebreaker," Fodness said. "They played really tough for young players."

Bemidji did not lose a set against Park Rapids. The singles winners were Alec Hess, Hokanson, Holter, and Nick Sledge.

"Against Park Rapids we moved some kids around a bit," Fodness said. "The thing that I liked the most that we usually won the second set by a wider margin than the first set."

Hokanson won both sets 6-0.

The winning doubles teams for Bemidji were: Kyle Fodness and Adam Holter, Tom Pavilis and Austin Korczak, and Gabe Heifort and Garrett Aterburg.

Heifort and Aterburg won their sets 6-0 and 6-1.

Bemidji is set to host Brainerd at 4:30 today.
