Beavers split with Upper Iowa

BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State University baseball team split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Upper Iowa University Thursday at the BSU diamond.

The Beavers won the opener 12-1 but a six-run top of the ninth for the Peacocks in the rematch handed the road team an 8-5 victory.

BSU is 13-11 overall and 6-4 in NSIC play.

Phil Bray moved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in NSIC play with the pitching win in the first game. He allowed just two hits and was supported by an 1-hit attack.

Ryan Anderson had a strong outing in the nightcap but finished with a no-decision after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

Bray pitched his third straight complete game. He allowing the one run on two hits with eight strikeouts.

After spotting the Peacocks a 1-0 lead in the second inning the Beavers came back with three in the bottom half of the frame.

After Jaryd Marks drew a walk, Logan Kalis rippedhis first home run of the day with a shot to left. Juan Molero was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt and Dylan Webb drove him home with a double to center field.

Marks and Kalis posted back-to-back singles with one out in the third. Molero moved them over with a ground out and, with the bases loaded after a walk, Matt Ellinghuysen delivered a double down the left field line that scored Marks and Kalis for a 5-1 lead.

The score remained 5-1 until the sixth when the Beavers scored seven runs. Kalis hit his second home run over the left field fence - this time a 3-run shot - and Webb sent one over the left center fence for his first homer of the season.

Kalis went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Marks finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Beavers took a 1-0 game in the nightcap with a single run in the second.

The Peacocks tied the game in the top of the fifth but the Beavers responded with three in the home half of the frame to own a 4-1 lead.

Single runs by each team in the eighth set up the six-run ninth for the Peacocks. Upper Iowa scored the final three runs on a home run to left center.

Hirsch went 3-for-4 for BSU with two RBI and a run scored. Lewis Baumann also had three hits.

The Beavers and Upper Iowa conclude the four-game series today with a doubleheader slated for a noon start.

Softball team drops doubleheader

BEMIDJI - Minnesota-Duluth used three home runs to ignite a doubleheader sweep over the Bemidji State softball team Thursday afternoon at the BSU diamond.

The Bulldogs picked up a 8-0 win in five innings in game one and an 8-0 victory in six innings in game two. BSU fell to 8-23 on the season while UMD improved to 26-16.

The games counted as nonconference games for both teams. The teams will meet again today in Bemidji for a pair of conference games starting at noon.

Megan Mullen pitched a one-hitter and fanned 11 in Thursday's first game.

In the nightcap UMD scored six runs off starting Beaver pitcher Allison Roberts in the first inning to take control.

Roberts pitched six innings and gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits.
