Detroit Lakes drops state basketball opener

MINNEAPOLIS - Guard Jarvis Johnson led the way with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds as DeLaSalle advanced with a 65-46 victory over Detroit Lakes in a Class AAA quarterfinal Wednesday at Williams Arena.

Reid Travis added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Islanders, who jumped out to a 36-22 halftime lead and maintained a comfortable cushion throughout the second half.

Joe Mollberg led the Lakers with 20 points and Rick Hutchinson chipped in 10 points.

Austin Pohlen pumped in 33 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and added five assists as Grand Rapids moved posted a 62-49 win over Mankato East in a Class AAA quarterfinal at Williams Arena.

Alex Illikainen added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Thunderhawks, as he and Pohlen combined for 48 of the team's points and 22 of their team's 41 total rebounds. Grand Rapids held a 38-23 halftime lead, and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

St. Paul Johnson hit six free throws in the final 20 seconds and went on to defeat Austin 71-66 in Wednesday's Class AAA quarterfinals.

After a back-and-forth game, Washburn emerged with a 52-49 victory over Rocori.

Washburn's Jerry Pratt was the difference down the stretch. He tied the score at 49-49 after completing a three-point play with 1:39 to play and then he put the Millers up for good when he drained a free throw with 1:13 remaining.

Lakeville North was sparked by a 3-pointer from Tyler 4:30 into the second half and the Panthers went on to down Moorhead 61-55 in Wednesday's Class 4A quarterfinals.

Moorhead would tie the game later and was within three points with 22 seconds to play, but the Spuds were forced to foul and Lakeville North cemented the win by hitting the free throws.

Moorhead had three players in double figures: Aaron Lien with 15, Austin Nelson with 14 and Matt Ellingson with 11.

Woodbury made just three of eight second-half free throws while Hopkins converted 32 of 39 opportunities. Siyani Chambers, who finished just 1-for-9 from the field but still had a game-high 25 points, set a new tournament record by making 22-of-24 free throws.

Osseo controlled the paint, scoring 32 of its 62 points from close range and advanced to a semifinal against Hopkins.

Eastview, the third seed, bowed out in a heated battle against Eden Prairie. Eden Prairie junior guard Grant Schaeffer hit three clutch 3-pointers late in the second half to force overtime and scored the first points in overtime.

Worthington extended its 2-point halftime lead to as much as five before Perham, the defending Class 2A champion, wrestled back the lead and held on for the win.

Jordan Bruhn led the Jackets with 21 points and Jordan Cresap added 13.

Plainview-Elgin-Millville rallied in the second half to defeat St. Peter 69-65 in a Class 2A quarterfinal.

Braham shocked St. Croix Lutheran by rallying from a four-point deficit with under 30 seconds remaining to advance to the Class 2A semifinals.

In Wednesday's other Class 2A game Litchfield forged a 20-8 lead at the break and downed Watertown-Mayer.
