Brian Maas of Bemidji won two of his three matches Friday at the Minnesota Class 3A wrestling tournament and will continue his quest for a top-six finish today.

Maas, a 106-pound freshman, opened with a 6-4 victory over Isaac Loosbrock of Chaska, but lost a heartbreaking 11-10 decision to Reid Lyden of East Ridge in the quarterfinals.

"Brian won his first match because of his feet," Bemidji Lumberjacks coach Rance Bahr said. "He had three takedowns and controlled the match the entire six minutes."

In the quarterfinals, Maas held a 10-8 lead over Lyden with 30 seconds to go, but Lyden rallied with an escape and a takedown.

Maas moved on to the consolation round, where he pinned Sam Bennyhof of Mound-Westonka in 5:38. Maas will meet Aaron Dick of St. Michael-Albertville today, and a win would assure the Bemidji wrestler of a top-six finish.

Bemidji's other wrestler, Alex Johnson, lost his opener 5-2 to Stefan Sauer of Rosemount and his tournament ended when Sauer lost in the quarterfinals.

Johnson was ahead 1-0 late in the second period of his opener but he allowed a takedown with 10 seconds to go in the stanza and Sauer used an escape early in the third period to open a 3-1 advantage.

"Alex had to take some chances when he was behind 3-1," Bahr said. "And Sauer was able to add to his lead."

Sauer lost in the quarterfinals, eliminating Johnson from the tournament.

Crag Brodeur of Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena won his 195-pound opener, 9-6 over Pat Hanson of Jackson County Central.

The win advanced Brodeur into Friday's quarterfinals against Adam Josephson of Minneota.

Heavyweight Alex Goodwin also represented the Bears, but he dropped his first match 12-4 to Pedro Guevara of Lake City.

Goodwin wrestled against Alex Schroepfer of Wabasso-Red Rock Central in the consolation round late Friday night.

Blake Olson of Fosston-Bagley lost his Class 2A opener when he was pinned by Jake Earl of Milaca in 44 seconds. Olson was relegated to the consolation round late Friday night.
