Beaver goalie Tomcikova nominated for national player of year honor

Bemidji State goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova has been named one of 30 nominees for the 15th annual Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented by Easton Foundations to the top player in NCAA Division I women's hockey.

Tomcikova, a senior from Bratislava, Slovakia, has been the leader of BSU's defense this season as she currently leads the nation with 950 saves while boasting the country's sixth-best saves percentage of .931.

Tomcikova has set every career record at BSU this season as she now holds the marks for shutouts, saves, games played, minutes played, wins, saves percentage and goals against average.

The BSU goaltender was also nominated for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Award.

Held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Frozen Four, the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award will be awarded at a brunch ceremony on March 17 at the Greysolon Ballroom in Duluth.

The first round of the women's WCHA playoffs, a best-of-three series format, gets underway Friday and Bemidji State (17-15-3), the sixth seed, will open at No. 3 North Dakota (20-10-3) at 2:37 p.m.

The second game of the series will be 2:37 p.m. Saturday and, if needed, a third game will be played at 2:37 p.m. Sunday.

The series will be a rematch of last season's first round playoff series that UND won.
