Bemidji wrestling season ends in section opener

Bemidji's run as the Section 8-3A wrestling champion has ended as the Lumberjacks dropped a 43-30 decision to St. Cloud Apollo in Saturday's quarterfinal round in Brainerd.

Earlier this month St. Cloud Apollo defeated the Jacks 47-12 in Bemidji and BHS coach Rance Bahr was pleased with the improvement his team showed on Saturday.

"We had some kids move to different weights to help the team and, overall, we had a good showing," Bahr said. "We wrestled hard. It would have been nice to win the section again this year and every year but that's not how it works.

"Obviously, you would like to win it all but, even though we didn't, I was happy with the effort the kids gave."

Brian Maas opened Saturday's meet with a 14-3 decision win but the Eagles claimed the next three matches, including a forfeit victory at 120.

Robert Treuer drew the Jacks within 15-7 with a 5-2 decision win at 132 but, once again, St. Cloud Apollo answered with three straight triumphs.

Kodi Craft and Wylli Tschudi each won via pin at 152 and 170 and Kade Johnson's 20-1 decision victory at 182 brought Bemidji within 33-24 but the Eagles won 18-6 at 195 and were awarded a forfeit victory at 220 to ice the team triumph.

Bemidji's Alex Johnson capped the meet with a pin in 1:34 at heavyweight.

"The team tournament is over and now we turn our attention to next week's section individual tournament," Bahr said. "We have kids who, if they wrestle well, can finish in the top two in their weights and make it to state."
