Curling: Potter, Pottinger rinks win

The Cassie Potter and Alliosn Pottinger rinks both won their first games at the USA National curling tournament Saturday in Philadelphia.

The Potter rink, which includes Bemidji natives Cassie Pottinger and Jamie Haskell, belted Maureen Stolt of St. Paul 11-5. The Pottinger rink, which includes Natalie Nicholson of Bemidji, ripped the Aileen Sormunen rink of Duluth 12-2.

In Sunday's morning bracket Potter will meet Alexandra Carlson of Wayzata and Pottinger will face Maureen Stolt of St. Paul.

Sunday's 3 p.m. session will see Potter facing Becca Hamilton of Wisconsin and Pottinger meeting Carlson.

In Saturday's late men's division openers, brothers Eric and Pete Fenson squared off and Pete posted a 9-3 victory.

Curling with Eric Fenson are Trevor Andrews, Quentin Way and Mark Lazar. Joining Pete Fenson are Shawn Rojeski, Joe Polo and Ryan Brunt.

Pete Fenson used the hammer to score three in the first end and he stole another in the second. Eric got on the board with two in the third but Pete answered with a pair in the fourth and a steal of one in the fifth.

Pete Fenson scored two in the seventh end to open a 9-3 lead and the teams did not finish the eighth.

Sunday's schedule sees Pete Fenson meeting Brady Clark of Washington in the morning round. In the evening session Eric Fenson will face Todd Birr of Mankato and Pete Fenson will match shots with Blake Morton of Wisconsin.

Eric Fenson has a bye in Sunday's morning round.
