Bemidji wrestlers win twice to start tournament

Tyler O'Beirne opened Friday's match against Nashwauk-Keewatin-Greenway with a pin and his teammates followed his example as the Bemidji wrestling team thumped the Spartans 46-24 in the opening round of the Hibbing Invitational.

With the victory, the Lumberjacks advanced to the winner's bracket round and the success continued as they belted second-seeded Princeton 49-19.

Today the third-seeded Jacks will face No. 1 Centennial at 11 a.m. and then close their tournament with a 2:30 p.m. battle against No. 4 Chisago Lakes.

In Friday's opener BHS won the first nine individual matches and bolted to a 40-0 advantage.

O'Beirne started the Lumberjacks on their winning ways with a second-period pin in the 106-pound division. John Seelye duplicated that result at 113 and Brian Maas and Logan Crosby kept the momentum going with decision victories at 120 and 126.

Robert Treuer collected a pin at 132 and three-straight decisions upped the lead to 34-0. Kade Johnson capped the initial spurt with a second-period pin at 160. Bemidji dropped the next four matches, but Alex Johnson pinned his opponent in 2:42.

In the Princeton match O'Bierne, Brian Maas, Dylan Sauceda, Crosby, Craig Maas, Craft, Kade Johnson and Al Johnson posted victories.
