Bemidji girls hockey: Warroad starts fast to top Jacks

A hot start from Warroad was too much for the Bemidji girls hockey team to handle in a 4-0 loss Tuesday at the Sanford Center.

The Warriors (3-0) scored four first-period goals to take an early lead in the shutout.

"We came out flat," Bemidji head coach Bob Brink said. "It is hard to come back against any team when you spot them a four-goal lead, especially against a great team like Warroad."

It was the first time the Lumberjacks (2-3-1) have played at the Sanford Center this season.

"It was a pretty neutral ice for both teams," Brink said. "It is a great facility and a great experience, but the ice is a little softer than what we are used to skating on. I wish I could put some of the blame to our start on that, but that was all our play."

Less than two minutes into the game Cayla Nelson put the visitors ahead 1-0.

Kayla Gardner increased the lead to two goals with her goal with 7:14 left in the first period.

Just seconds after killing a penalty, Warroad struck again when Madison Egeland scored the third goal with 2:49 remaining in the period.

Exactly one minute later Sierra Hanowski found the back of the net.

Warroad outshot Bemidji 11-3 in the first period.

Although it was not able to get on the board, Bemidji's defense improved in the second period as Warroad only had seven shots on goal in the remainder of the game.

"The girls were disappointed with the first period," Brink said. "They battled back and played better hockey after that, they played the way they know how to play. Now it just comes to putting goals up on the scoreboard."

Bemidji goaltender Morgan Miller finished with 14 saves.

Warroad goaltender Paige Fahlstrom stopped all eight shots that came her way.

Bemidji will play at River Lakes 7 p.m. on Friday.
