St. Croix Lutheran captures first state football title

MINNEAPOLIS - St. Croix Lutheran High School battled to the wire, with the Class 3A football title game not decided until the final few plays, to capture its first-ever football state championship Saturday afternoon.

St. Croix Lutheran defeated Fairmont 34-32 in a game that finished shortly after 3 p.m. Bemidji High School wraps up the 30th annual Prep Bowl, played at the Metrodome, in a game against Rocori for the Class 4A title game, to finish the high school football season.

Fairmont scored a touchdown with 8 seconds remaining in the Class 3A game, but failed on its two-point attempt to tie the game. St. Croix Lutheran then recovered an onside kick to seal the title.

The undefeated Lumberjacks also are attempting to win the school's first state championship since Minnesota began a playoff system.
