Bemidji girls swimming: Frey sizzles at state preliminaries

Steph Frey assured herself two state championship medals as the Bemidji junior placed third in the 100 free and 200 individual medley on Friday at the Minnesota State High School League state meet preliminaries at the University of Minnesota pool.

The top 16 finishers after Friday's preliminaries will swim during Saturday's noon finals, and the top eight preliminary finishers have earned All-State status.

Swimming in Saturday's consolation action will be Lexie Hendricks who was 15th Friday in the 500 free with a time of 5:26.83.

The 200 free and 400 free relays will also compete Saturday as they cracked the top 16 on Friday.

The 400 free relay unit of Danielle Hoven, Erin Arndt, Kenzie Timms and Frey placed 16th with a time of 3:46.66 while the 200 free relay squad of Timms, Arndt, Hoven and Frey was 14th with a school record time of 1:41.81.

In addition to her 15th place showing in the 500 free, Hendricks was 18th Friday in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.19. Arndt also swam in the 100 fly and she placed 20th with a time of 1:03.35.

Neither swimmer advanced to Saturday's consolation finals, however. Frey is alive for a state championship in each of her two events. The junior set a school record with a time of 2:08.68 in Friday's 200 IM preliminary, breaking Brook McKee's record set in 1995.

In the 100 free, Frey was clocked in 1:02.70. That time established another school standard as she broke her own previous school record.

Joining Frey, Hendricks and the relay teams Saturday will be Jana Hedstrom, who qualified for the state finals in diving.

Hedstrom enters Saturday's competition in sixth place among the 16 finals qualifiers. Hedstrom and the other divers will complete their round with three dives on Saturday.
