Jacks end season with two wins

The Bemidji girls tennis team closed its regular season Tuesday with a pair of victories, downing Crookston 6-1 at the Center Court Fitness Center in Grand Forks and dumping East Grand Forks 6-1 in East Grand Forks.

The two wins extended Bemidji's dual-meet winning streak to 13 and gave the Lumberjacks a final record of 13-3.

"Up and down the lineup we've come through this year," said BHS coach Mark Fodness whose team earned the second seed in the Section 8AA tournament which begins Friday in Sartell.

"I am proud of what the girls have accomplished and how they have played this year. And they should be proud as well."

Tuesday against Crookston BHS swept the singles matches and setting the tone was Jessica Solberg who coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles.

Amy Frosaker also had no trouble at second singles as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Capping the singles sweep were Claudia Bellew's 6-1, 6-1 win at third and MacKenzie Schultz' 6-3, 6-2 victory at fourth.

Bemidji also won at first and third doubles. Emma Nielsen and Katie Ditmanson teamed for a 7-5, 6-2 win at first while Francesca Huerd and Annika Johnson won 6-2, 6-2 at third.

Claire Baumgartner and Olivia Dickinson dropped a 6-2, 5-7, (10-3) decision at second doubles.

The Jacks capped their day with the win at East Grand Forks. The lone loss came at first singles where Solberg was defeated by Jessamy Jones who is ranked in the top-10 in the state Class A division.

Frosaker, Bellew and Schultz each won in straight sets as did the doubles tandems of Nielsen and Ditmanson, Baumgartner and Dickinson and Huerd and Johnson.

In the section meet the Jacks were seeded second behind Brainerd. Trailing the two top seeds were Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Thief River Falls, Moorhead, Detroit Lakes and Little Falls.
