Hockey Day is coming to Bemidji; 13th annual event set for winter 2019

BHS girls soccer team rebounds from big loss with a big win

In a matter of two days the Bemidji girls soccer team has experienced the highs and the lows of a blowout decision.

Tuesday the Lumberjacks suffered a 9-2 loss at East Grand Forks but Thursday they returned home and demolished Crookston 9-1.

"We definitely turned the tables from Tuesday's game," said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover.

"It's a nice feeling to be on this end of that score but I really was hoping for a tougher test. We want to have tougher games so we can prepare for teams like East Grand Forks and St. Cloud Cathedral."

Bemidji doesn't have any more time to prepare for St. Cloud Cathedral as the Jacks will head to St. Cloud 7 p.m. Saturday.

Crookston goalie Sydney Luckow prevented Thursday's differential from being even more lopsided as the junior made 18 saves in each half. The Jacks connected on six of their 24-first-half shots and added three goals in the final 40 minutes.

"It was fun for the girls to continually attack and dominate offensively," Schoonover said.

Caitlin Blotske started the romp when she converted Erin Booth's assist three minutes into the game. Emily Boyer notched the eventual game-winner off Blotske's feed two minutes later and at the eight-minute mark Blotske scored again, this time with the help of Kelsey Merck's assist.

The first half also featured Erin Booth's unassisted goal at 20 minutes, Rachel Bitter's tally off Boyer's feed at 22 minutes and Maari Stocker's unassisted marker at the 31-minute mark.

The second half was highlighted by goals courtesy of Josie Spry, Booth and Stocker, the latter coming off Katy Gray's feed.

Casey Palmer had a quiet game as she faced only three shots and stopped two of them.

"This was a good bounce-back game for us after Tuesday's 9-2 loss at East Grand Forks," Schoonover said. "The girls played with control and we were able to work on our attack game.

"But we'll definitely see more pressure on our defense at Cathedral on Saturday," Schoonover predicted.
