Bemidji High School girls soccer suffers first loss at EGF

The three-game winning streak to start the season for the Bemidji girls soccer team came to an abrupt end Tuesday when the Lumberjacks were beaten 9-2 at East Grand Forks.

The Green Wave roared to a 3-0 lead after six minutes and the Jacks never mounted a serious comeback.

"During the first six minutes East Grand Forks came out like dynamite and we were flat-footed," said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. "We never were able to play our game or control the ball."

EGF co-captain Dani Pickard set the tone with a goal only two minutes into the action.

Emily Swenson upped the lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 5-minute mark and another a minute later.

Josie Spry drew the Lumberjacks within 3-1 when she scored on a rebound of Caitlin Blotske's shot 10 minutes into the game but Pickard answered 10 minutes later and Christina Arroyo gave the home team a 5-1 halftime lead with a goal at the 34-minute mark.

"Offensively when we got the ball we basically threw it away with a panic kick," Schoonover said. "Defensively we had too many breakdowns in the middle and East Grand capitalized."

Blotske scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the second stanza but the home team countered with four goals during the next 20 minutes.

BHS goalie Casey Palmer did her best to keep the damage to a minimum as the sophomore finished with 18 saves.

"East Grand is a solid team and a rival and we usually play very tough against them," Schoonover said. "But Tuesday East Grand did a nice job of attacking and we came out flat.

"The good news is that we will use this game as a learning tool. Hopefully this game will help us better prepare for the rest of the season."

Bemidji returns home 5 p.m. Thursday for a game at the middle school field against Crookston.
