Legion tops Big Lake 7-6 in district opener

The Bemidji Legion baseball team battled back from a 4-2 deficit after three innings to defeat Big Lake 7-6 in Wednesday's opening round of the District 6 tournament in St. Cloud.

The victory advanced Bemidji into the second round of the winner's bracket and Wednesday evening's game against St. Cloud Chutes.

Against Big Lake Bemidji committed four errors which led to four unearned runs but the offense was able to overcome those defensive mistakes by scoring a run in the fourth and two in the fifth and sixth.

"It was good to get that first win out of the way," said Bemidji coach Mike Fogelson. "We trailed most of the way but found a way to win."

Big Lake also had its defensive troubles and a wild throw with two out in the bottom of the sixth handed the Legion the eventual tying and winning runs.

Bemidji trailed 6-5 heading into the frame and Tyler Follis opened the stanza with a double. Big Lake reliever Ross Stein retired the next two hitters but Mason Bellew kept the rally alive by drawing a walk.

Zach Solheim then bounced a ground ball to third but the throw to first was wide and both runners were able to score on the error.

Trent Baker went the distance on the Legion mound and improved his individual record to 9-0. Overall the Legion is 23-4.

Baker allowed only six hits, fanned five and walked five.
