VFW?sweeps Thief?River?Falls

The Bemidji VFW baseball team improved to 19-5 after sweeping Thief River Falls in a doubleheader at Thief River Falls on Saturday.

The Vets took the opener 12-0 and claimed the nightcap 4-3.

Ryan Hirt tossed a one-hitter in the first game while his teammates pounded 10 hits in the five-inning contest.

Bemidji scored the only runs it would need in a four-run first. Mark Fenner singled to start the big inning and, after Billy Baumgartner was hit by a pitch, Connor McNallan singled home Fenner.

A pair of walks set the table for Drew Peterson's two-run single and Parker Lucas capped the inning with an RBI single.

The VFW collected three runs in the third on the strength of an error, single, passed ball, RBI singles by Devin Barrett and Nick Hovila plus Fenner's RBI groundball.

Bemidji ended matters with a five-run fifth which featured two-run doubles by Hovila and Cody Labernick.

Hirt struck out nine and walked two.

Bemidji scored a run in the top of the seventh to claim the rematch 4-3. With the game tied 3-3 McNallan banged a two-out single and Baumgartner followed with an RBI triple.

Mitch Buckanaga's single plated Tom Revering in the first inning and Barrett drove in Adam Lewis in the second with a double.

The VFW took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on singles by Hirt and McNallan but Thief River Falls knotted the game with a pair in the bottom of the sixth.

Lucas opened on the VFW mound and pitched into the sixth. Labernik earned the win as he completed the sixth and Peterson posted a save by tossing a scoreless seventh.
