Hockey Day is coming to Bemidji; 13th annual event set for winter 2019

Season comes to end for BHS boys tennis team

The Bemidji boys tennis season officially ended Thursday at the Section 8-2A individual tournament in Brainerd.

In singles play Alec Hess won his first match as he swept Reno Fussy of Brainerd 6-3, 7-5. Hess was eliminated in the next round, however, when he fell to Jake Anderson of Fergus Falls 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

"Alec had an impressive day," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "He dominated Fussy in the first set and rallied from a 2-5 deficit in the second to win the match.

"That put him against Anderson of Fergus Falls who was the top-rated kid in singles. Alec almost won the first set and, even though the 6-1 score in the second set may not reflect it, Alec played his best tennis of the year. Just about every game in the second set went to deuce."

Levi Rickert was seeded fourth in the singles bracket and earned a first-round bye. Rickert drew Kurt Meyer of Moorhead in the second round and lost 6-2, 6-3.

"Levi would be the first one to say that he wasn't at his best," Fodness said. "At this level every opponent is talented and winning or losing comes down to how well you are playing.

"Despite Thursday's loss Levi had a great season," Fodness added.

Bemidji's top doubles team of Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness was seeded fifth and the duo posted a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Shawn Kidder and Jared Forst of Sartell in the first round. In Tuesday's team tournament Holter and Fodness lost to Kidder and Forst 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Holter and Fodness did not fare as well in their second match as they dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to David Schneck and Jesse Schneeburger of Fergus Falls.

"Taking the Sartell team to three sets and closing the match with a 6-1 win was a huge accomplishment," the coach said. "In their second match we faced one of the top two doubles teams in the tournament and we played very well. Adam and Kyle left the court knowing that they didn't leave many points on the court."

Also representing the Lumberjacks in doubles play were Jack Boyer and Craig Lindseth. They squared off against Robbie Satterness and Rickey Satterness of Sartell in another rematch of Tuesday's team tournament. Boyer and Lindseth lost 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday but extended the Sartell doubles team to three sets Thursday, eventually falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

"Jack and Craig had just lost convincingly to this doubles team on Tuesday but Thursday they played their best tennis of the year and took the team to three sets," Fodness said.

"Our season is over but we walked off the court knowing that we were at our best. And that's a rewarding way to end the year," the coach added.
