Brainerd tops Jacks in battle of favored teams

In the first meeting of the spring between two of the favored teams in Section 8AAA, Brainerd downed the Bemidji softball team 5-0 Friday in Brainerd.

The Lumberjacks threatened on three occasions but were unable to produce the big hit when needed.

A passed ball advanced Monsrud to second and the senior gained third on a fly ball. A groundout, however, ended the threat.

In the third inning Laura Clark singled and pinch runner Tammi Jo Olson gained second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundball. Olson was stranded at third, however, when a strikeout ended the inning.

Bemidji's final threat came in the fourth when Jess Yost singled and Taylor McLean doubled. But another ground ball ended that opportunity.

McLean had two hits for the Jacks and she also handled the mound duties. Brainerd scored a single run in the second, two in the third and two insurance tallies in the sixth.

Bemidji (5-3) will make a rare home appearance today when it hosts Grand Forks Central at noon.
