Errors cost BHS softball in loss to Duluth East

It's a long way from Bemidji to Duluth but Thursday's trip by the Bemidji softball team seemed especially lengthy as the Lumberjacks gave Duluth East five unearned runs which handed the home team a 5-3 victory.

"We should have won 2-0 but we gave away too many outs," said BHS coach Brad Takkunen. "We had seven errors and each was on a fundamental play."

Bemidji committed three of its errors on consecutive plays in the first inning and the miscues gave Duluth East two runs.

The Jacks had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning when Summer Monsrud walked, stole second and scored courtesy of Janelle Williams' single.

BHS regained the lead at 3-2 with a pair in the upper third. Monsrud started that rally with a single and she scored when Jineane Williams singled and the relay to the infield was wild. Janelle Williams followed with a single to plate Jineane Williams.

The Lumberjacks maintained their advantage until the bottom of the fourth when a single and three more errors gave the Greyhounds two more runs.

Duluth East closed the scoring in the fifth when a single, stolen base and error led to another unearned tally.

Jess Yost was the losing pitcher. She went the distance and allowed only five hits. The sophomore also struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Bemidji, 4-2, will head to Detroit Lakes Saturday to take on the home team and Thief River Falls.
