Bemidji boys golf team finishes fifth at DL meet

Trey Dale tied for medalist honors with a 79 to lead the Bemidji boys golf team to fifth place at Wednesday's 16-team Detroit Lakes Invitational hosted by the Wildflower Golf Course.

Dale was one of four golfers who finished at 79 but Nick Forsberg of Staples- Motley birdied the first playoff hole to capture the individual title.

Dale missed his birdie putt by a few inches and had to settle for par and second place.

Also carding 79s but bogeying the first playoff hole were Carter Smith of Detroit Lakes and Dave Kocera of Duluth Central.

"It was cold and windy but the kids did very well," said BHS coach Seth Knutson. "After watching them in practice I knew what type of swings the players had but I didn't know about their chipping and putting. And today they were very good in those phases."

Duluth Central took the team title with a round of 325. Detroit Lakes was a close second at 329 while Staples-Motley was third at 331, Grand Rapids fourth at 335 and Bemidji fifth at 335.

In addition to Dale's 79 Max Hazelton and Elliot Leinen carded 85s, Garrett Janiksela an 86, Caleb Hanson an 87 and Jordan Manick a 106.

"Considering the weather I thought we played very well and a 79 for the first meet, especially under these conditions, was very good," Knutson said.

The Lumberjacks will return to action Tuesday and Wednesday at The Pines and The Preserve near Nisswa.
