Bemidji HS tennis team beats Crookston

Tuesday's tennis meet at Crookston was tied 2-2 with three matches in progress and two of the combatants were playing the third set.

In order to come home a winner Bemidji needed to capture at least two of those individual battles.

"Either team could have won the meet," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "It came down to which team would win those decisive matches."

The Lumberjacks proved to be better under pressure as Alex Hess prevailed at second singles, Matt Hokanson did the same at third singles and the first doubles tandem of Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness blitzed their opponents 6-1 in the decisive third set.

The result of those individual efforts was a 5-2 Bemidji victory.

"We were down early in some of our matches but everybody came through," Fodness said. "I was impressed by the mental toughness we showed. When we needed to win, we did. Even in the two matches that we lost we extended them to three sets."

Only four matches were decided in two sets and the Jacks claimed three of them. Levi Rickert was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at first singles and the third doubles tandem of Tim Poulus and Zach Hewitt prevailed 6-4, 6-2.

Hokanson won in straight sets but he needed a tie-breaker to claim a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win.

At second singles Hess collected a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory while Holter and Fodness came through with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 comeback win.

At fourth singles Noah Holter lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and the second doubles tandem of Jack Boyer and Craig Lindseth fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

Bemidji, 2-0, will be home Thursday for a triangular. The Lumberjacks will battle Grand Rapids at 2 p.m. and Park Rapids at 5 p.m.
