Video: Bemidji resident makes tough shot from red line in Hockey Hot Shots promotion
John Martens, a Bemidji resident, won a 60" HDTV from Paul Bunyan Communications as part of the Hockey Hot Shots Promotion held during BSU Men's Hockey games at the Sanford Center.
Martens was one of three contestants selected at random at Saturday's game between BSU and Colorado College to take a shot from center ice at the first period intermission.
"My wife, Chelley, has been signing me up for Hockey Hot Shots since the season started. I was obviously surprised to hear my name called - and then the anxiety built through the remainder of the first period. We have two boys that play hockey, a squirt and a mite, so I was hoping to at least hit the goal line, let alone the net, so I wouldn't catch too much grief from the coaches and other parents. I did a little stick handling and then let the puck fly. I looked up and saw it bounce in. I couldn't believe it! I've been told by some parents and coaches that I'll be hosting some college hockey and Stanley Cup viewing parties!" said Martens.
Martens is the second to win an HDTV this season through the Paul Bunyan Communications Hockey Hot Shot promotion. Lauren Cains, a freshman at BSU, won on November 11 during the BSU-Alaska-Anchorage game.
"We're thrilled that John won. Not only is he from Bemidji, but he's been a loyal customer of ours for years! He gunned the shot right in. It's hard to believe we've had two winners that have made that shot from center ice through the small opening in the hot shot board this year!" said Brian Bissonette, Paul Bunyan Communications Marketing Supervisor.
The Paul Bunyan Communications Hockey Hot Shots contest is held during the first intermission at each of the BSU Men's home hockey games on the 2010-11 schedule. The contest sign up is held during pregame and part of the first period of each game and there is no charge to sign up. Three contestants are selected at random to participate each night. All contestants receive a coupon for a free PBTV On Demand movie rental, any contestant hitting the board receives an advanced feature cordless phone, and a contestant who puts the puck in the net through the middle of the Hockey Hot Shots board wins an HDTV.
"Our Cooperative is proud to support Beaver Pride in many different ways. Hockey Hot Shots is one way we could make BSU Men's Hockey games even more exciting for the fans in the stands," added Bissonette.
