Dylan Hoven captured the 50 free and 100 free and Adam Falk won the 100 fly to lead the Bemidji boys swimming and diving team to fourth place at Friday's six-team Lumberjacks Invitational.

The Jacks scored 395 points and trailed Detroit Lakes (523), Grand Rapids (479.5) and Grand Forks Red River (441). Completing the team scores were Perham with 277.5 and Moorhead with 145.

"Our top guys swam very well and, overall, we are finishing the races better," said BHS coach Woody Leindecker. "What we need to do now is get better starts."

As has been the custom this winter Hoven has dominated the short-distance freestyle events. Friday he posted a time of 22.32 to win the race and teammate Nick Gubbels was sixth at 25.30.

In the 100 free Hoven won with a time of 49.83.

Falk claimed the 100 fly in 59.84 and Eli Wright was eighth at 1:12.84.

Bemidji's other event victory came in the 200 free relay as Falk, Gubbels, Nick Nybeg and Hoven combined for a time of 1:34.27.

The Lumberjacks were nosed out by Detroit Lakes in the 400 free relay as the Lakers won in 3:29.06 and the BHS quartet of Falk, Nyberg, Gubbels and Hoven was second in 3:29.46.

"Last week at the Detroit Lakes meet the same thing happened but then both teams were clocked in 3:31," Leindecker said. "Friday night both teams cut two seconds off their times but Detroit Lakes still edged us out.

"It is going to be an interesting race at the section tournament," the coach predicted.

Bemidji's other notable finishes Friday included Nyberg's third place in the 500 free (5:20.62), Dylan Tillemans' fourth in diving (165.60), Seth Olson's sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.78), Matt Arndt's seventh in the same event (1:15.66), Hemp's seventh in the 200 IM (2:26.40) and the seventh-place finish of the 200 medley relay unit of Hemp, Arndt, Wright and Seth Olson (2:04.21).
