Holter top finisher for Jacks ski team at Giants Ridge
Adam Holter finished 36th in a field of more than 200 skating-style cross country skiers at Saturday's giant Mesabi East meet held at Giants Ridge.
Saturday's event, which is the largest high school cross country race in the country, attracted 1,307 skiers and each varsity division featured more than 200 competitors.
Originally scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., the meet was pushed back to noon because of the cold. By noon the temperature reached above zero and at mid-afternoon the temperature peaked at 5 above.
"The conditions weren't too bad and I was very pleased with our performances," said BHS coach Mark Walters. "There were 90 teams and, because each team is limited to three skiers per event, the races include only the best each team has to offer.
"This is the welcome to the 'major leagues' of high school cross country skiing," the coach added.
In the boys 5.3-km varsity skating event the winning time was 14:55. Holter claimed 36th in 16:58. Also competing for the Lumberjacks were Kyle Sagedahl who was 76th (18:02) and John Buckanaga who was 129th (19:47).
The girls skaters also competed on a 5.3-km track and the overall winning time was 17:55. Bemidji's top finish was by Laura Yourd who placed 92nd (23:06). Kim Truedson was 138th (25:03) and California Thorson 159th (27:03).
The varsity classical course was 5.6-km long and the best time in the boys division was 15:36. Pacing the Lumberjacks was Tony Sagedahl who was 60th (18:35) while Sam Dwyer was 126th (20:29) and Eli Rassler 147th (21:10).
In the girls varsity division the winner crossed the finish line in 19:36. Lumberjack Bailey Drewes placed 43rd (22:08), Alicia Papke-Larson 117th (25:03) and Mari Eggebo 149th (26:43).
The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday at Fergus Falls.
