Bemidji hosts Minnesota regional
Junior curlers will take center stage at the Bemidji Curling Club this weekend as the facility hosts the Minnesota regional beginning Thursday and extending through Sunday.
The top two junior men's and top two junior women's teams from this weekend's tournament will advance to the national championship meet which will be Jan. 29-Feb. 5 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The winners at that competition will earn berths in the World Junior Championships March 5-13 in Perth, Scotland.
Last year the USA women captured the bronze medal while the men were ninth.
Bemidji will be well represented at this weekend's event. In the junior men's division Team Johannsen features four Bemidji curlers including Eric Johannsen, Micah Johnson, Joel Johannsen and Brian Oakes.
Team Andrews is the returning champion and includes Bemidji curlers Trevor Andrews, Jarl Timothy Wagner and Mark Fenner plus Ben Wilson of Hibbing.
Bemidji curler Josh Bahr will be on Team Wald along with Aaron Wald of Chisholm and Hibbing curlers Jared Zezel and John Muller.
In the women's division Bemidji's representative is Rachel Humeniuk who is skipping a team that includes Megan Myhrer and Lindsey Frazer of Grand Rapids plus Emma Bromenschenkel of Cohasset.
Bemidji's event is one of six regional tournaments and two men's and two women's teams will advance to the national meet.
Thursday's schedule includes draws and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Friday the curlers will be on the ice at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. while Saturday's slate features curling at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The men's round-robin will conclude with Sunday's 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. draws and the playoffs, if necessary, will be 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday. The women's double round-robin will finish on Saturday.
Everyone is invited to watch the curling and there is no admission charge.
