Fergus Falls wins Big Bear wrestling title

The Big Bear wrestling tournament hosted by BCLBI in Cass Lake highlighted last week's area action and Fergus Falls took top honors in the 36-team event.

The host team tied for 22nd with 65 points and Bagley Fosston finished 28th with 47.5 points.

Fergus Falls captured the team title with 180 points. The Otters also had three individual champions, the most of any team in the tournament.

BGMR placed second with 167.5 points and Thief River Falls was third with 166.5. Rounding out the top-five were Hutchinson with 143.5 and Wadena-DC with 136.5.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley-Laporte-Nevis was 17th (80.50), Park Rapids 18th (77.0) and Deer River 24th (64.5).

BCLBI's top individual finisher was Alex Goodwin who placed seventh with a 5-2 record at 215-pounds.

Bagley-Fosston also had one place winner, Blake Olson who was sixth at 160. Olson went 4-3 during the tournament.

During the past week Red Lake won a pair of games, Bagley went 1-1, Cass Lake-Bena and Blackduck were 0-2 and Kelliher-Northome and Laporte finished 0-1.

The Warriors (2-1) stopped Laporte 63-46 and downed Cass Lake-Bena 66-51. Serena Graves scored 18 points in the win over Laporte while Mari Cobenais had 13.

Valynncia White scored 25 points for Laporte (0-5). The junior also grabbed 11 rebounds, had four steals and converted 10 of her 14 free throw attempts. Hannah Machado had seven boards while Edie Johnson had five rebounds, dished four assists and scored eight points.

Biancha Langaas contributed six boards and Renny Alia four. Alia also had seven points.

In Red Lake's victory over CL-B Graves had 23 points while Tiffany Haukaas added 17 and Taylor Dickinson-Graves had 12.

CL-B was led by Joy Smith who had 14 points. Jordan Jackson added 11 and Autumn Brunelle contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.

On Dec. 11 the Panthers (0-6) lost 70-31 to Crosby-Ironton and last Tuesday they dropped an 82-35 decision to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

Brunelle had 14 points and 14 rebounds against C-I and she scored nine points in the loss to WHA. Jackson finished with eight points in the WHA game and Smith tallied seven.

Nevis stopped Clearbrook-Gonvick last week 73-60 despite 21 points by CG's Brooke Wraa and 13 by teammate Whitney Rogstad. Bagley evened its record at 2-2 with a 46-39 loss to Waubun and a 55-49 victory over Mahnomen while Blackduck fell to 1-4 after losing 61-46 at Nevis and 74-36 at Red Lake County Central.

Kelliher-Northome enters this week with a 2-4 record after losing 58-48 last Tuesday at Lake of the Woods.

This week's schedule began Monday with Bagley entertaining Fertile-Beltrami and Blackduck hosting Lake of the Woods. Today finds CL-B at Menahga, WHA at Laporte and Kelliher-Northome visiting Hill City. Bagley also hosts Clearbrook-Gonvick today in its final pre-Christmas contest.

The Bagley boys cagers improved to 3-1 last week after collecting three victories. The Flyers opened the week with an 83-31 trouncing of Waubun and followed with a 63-43 victory at Clearbrook-Gonvick and a 78-56 home win over Mahnomen.

Cass Lake-Bena (3-2) split a pair of games, blitzing WHA 88-42 but dropping a 63-60 verdict at Red Lake.

Against the Wolves CL-B shot 67 percent from the field and the game was over by intermission as Cass Lake-Bena enjoyed a 42-20 lead.

Jake Ellis paced the attack with 20 points and seven rebounds. Roberto Gomez added 15 points and eight assists while Tyler Nupson had 11 points and Cody Wind 10.

In the loss to Red Lake the Panthers and Warriors (2-2) were tied 60-60 with eight seconds left. CL-B lost possession on a turnover and the home team turned the miscue into the decisive points.

Ellis finished with 26 points and 17 rebounds. Caleb Fisher had 14 points and 11 caroms while Chad Wittner contributed eight points and seven steals.

In other area boys basketball action last week Blackduck (3-3) defeated Nevis 77-68 and Lake of the Woods 60-47 but lost 75-70 to Littlefork-Big Falls. Kelliher-Northome (2-2) stopped Lake of the Woods 74-70.

K-N is at Hill City today while Blackduck visits Bigfork and Bagley hosts Fertile-Beltrami. Red Lake will participate in a tournament at Thief River Falls Dec. 27-29 and CL-B will play in the Crosby-Ironton tournament Dec. 28-30.

The Bagley-Fosston hockey team enters today's game against Kittson Central with a 1-6 record. Since defeating Ely 7-5 on Dec. 3 the Flyers have dropped four straight games including Saturday's 10-1 loss to Prairie Centre (Long Prairie).

Jesse Dukek scored the lone goal for B-F but it was not enough to counter a 7-0 first-eriod start by Prairie Centre.

Following the Christmas break Bagley-Fosston will head to Pequot Lakes for a tournament.
