Bemidji's Heifort named to AP state football team

Senior Ernie Heifort of the Bemidji High School football team has been named to the Minnesota Associated Press All-State high school second-team.

The All-State selections were determined through votes by the state's sports writers and broadcasters.

Heifort, 6-5 and 230 pounds, made the second-team as a linebacker. He was the quarterback of the Bemidji defense and helped carry the Lumberjacks to a 9-2 overall record and a berth in the state Class 4A tournament where they lost to Rogers in the state opener.

Heifort played linebacker early in the year but broke his hand midway through the season. He missed one game because of the injury but returned for the rest of the campaign. Because he needed to wear a cast on his hand, Heifort switched to defensive end.

Despite missing one game Heifort had 50 solo tackles and 84 assisted tackles. He also had 3.0 sacks and eight tackles for loss. He deflected a pass, caused three fumbles and recovered a fumble.

During his Lumberjack career Heifort had 327 tackles, including 123 solos. He also collected four sacks, 12 hurries, 17 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a safety.

The senior has received numerous contacts from collegiate programs and he currently is weighing his options. The University of Minnesota is one of the schools courting him and earlier this month Heifort spent a weekend in Minneapolis, attending a Gopher basketball game and visiting with the football coaches, including new head coach Jerry Kill.

Reggie Gandy, a runningback from DeLaSalle, was named AP Player of the Year. The lone non-metro players to make the All-State first team were senior Albany runningback Bryan Schlangen, senior Crookston defensive lineman Brody Davidson and senior kick and punt returner Kevin Kramer of Eden Valley-Watkins.

Among the players joining Heifort on the second team were running back Jordan Hayes and offensive lineman Joe Haeg of Brainerd, offensive lineman Jake Lesar of Hermantown, wide receiver Derek Vidor and linebacker Alex Meixell of Rogers and defensive lineman Brandon Anderson of Sartell. All of those players are seniors.
