Moorhead edges Bemidji High School girls hockey team

A schedule which included three games in as many days got the better of the Bemidji High School girls hockey team as the Lumberjacks dropped Saturday's 3-1 decision to Moorhead at The Sanford Center.

The current stretch of games started Thursday when BHS lost 1-0 to Grand Rapids. Friday saw the Jacks blitz Holy Angels 10-0 but on Saturday the wear and tear of the schedule took its toll.

"The kids tried their best but they didn't have anything left in the tank," said Bemidji coach Matt Menne. "We tried to stay fresh with short shifts but playing three games in three nights was too much to ask of these kids."

Bemidji dominated the first period and was rewarded with the lone goal of the session when Karleigh Wolkerstorfer scored off Chaniel Nelson's feed.

Moorhead drew even 6:50 into the second stanza when Kristin Drechsel beat Jacks goalie Laura Thompson with a quick wrist shot from the left circle.

With 25 seconds to play in the period the Spuds scored what proved to be the game-winner as Ashlie Talley found the net with a rebound while Moorhead was on the power play.

The Lumberjacks had opportunities to score the equalizer in the third stanza as Bemidji sent 14 shots at Myers. Moorhead, however, scored the lone goal of the period with a tip-in seven minutes into the period.

Bemidji, 3-7, will be at Crookston Tuesday.
