BHS Thursday sports preview: Jacks wrestlers travel to Willmar for section battle

Rance Bahr wanted an early-season barometer which would show the potential of the Bemidji wrestling team in the Section 8AAA playdowns so he scheduled tonight's trip to Willmar.

"Sauk Rapids and Willmar are the teams to beat in the section so this triangular will give us a good idea as to where we stand in the section," Bahr said. "We look to push both teams and I think we should because we match up well."

The evening begins at 5 p.m. when the Lumberjacks tangle with Willmar. Following that match BHS will take on Sauk Rapids.

"I'm optimistic that we can leave with two wins," Bahr said. "I am expecting two close matches and by the end of the night we will know where we stand and what we need to work on.

"A goal of ours (tonight) will be to send the message that Bemidji is back in the section championship picture. It would be nice to see the kids get some recognition and some reward for their hard work in the off-season," Bahr said.

Tonight's lineup is similar to the one which dumped Deer River 51-18 last Friday.

Tyler O'Beirne is scheduled to wrestle at 103 and he will be followed by Brian Maas (112), Logan Crosby (119), Jake Crosby (125), Ryle Masterson (130), Craig Maas (135), Cody Thoring (140), Kade Johnson (145), Colton Doty (152), Kody Craft (160), Tyler Molitor (171), Logan Knutson (189), Brenden Fredricksen (215) and Alex Johnson (heavyweight).

Friday and Saturday the Jacks will participate in the Paul Bunyan Invitational hosted by Brainerd.

The girls hockey team will head to the Community Arena 7:30 p.m. today to tangle with Grand Rapids.

After opening the winter 0-5 Bemidji swept a pair of home games last weekend, nipping North St. Paul 1-0 and blitzing River Lakes (Rocori) 4-1.

Tonight's contest begins a stretch of three games in as many days as Holy Angels heads to Nymore Arena Friday and Moorhead will tangle with the Lumberjacks Saturday night at The Sanford Center.

With road victories over East Grand Forks, Monticello and Sartell in the books the boys hockey team heads to Moorhead tonight. Saturday the Jacks will visit St. Cloud Apollo and next Tuesday they will travel to Warroad.

BHS will finally have a home game Dec. 16 when it entertains Thief River Falls at The Sanford Center.

Tuesday night Bemidji dominated Sartell, taking a 5-0 lead after the opening stanza on way to a 7-2 victory.

Matt Serratore scored twice while Tyler Follis, Dillon Eichstadt, John Forseth, Max Hazelton and Jake White also slipped pucks past Sartell goalie Alex Haluptzok.

After a pair of home losses the BHS girls basketball team plays its first game on the road tonight when it invades Grand Rapids.

Tuesday the Lumberjacks lost 67-39 to Thief River Falls. Following tonight's game Bemidji will be off until Tuesday when it hosts Hibbing. Next week also sees the Jacks entertaining St. Cloud Apollo on Dec. 18.
