Field is set for Prep Bowl finals

The field was completed for the 29th annual Prep Bowl this weekend with the staging of the high school semifinals at the Metrodome.

The 12 survivors return to the same site Friday and Saturday for the six championship games.

Where all six were once played on a single day, as are the semifinals, they have been divided in recent years with four title games Friday and the final two Saturday.

It will begin Friday at 10 a.m. when Cromwell and Lanesboro play for the Nine Man title.

Cromwell, which had not expected to reach this level, is the old-timer of the pair, playing in its 15th state tournament. It won titles in 1995-96-98 and reached the title game four other times.

Cromwell lost its season opener to Nevis 27-26 and ended its regular season 4-4 before winning its last five starts in the playoffs.

Lanesboro is appearing in its fourth tournament, never gaining the finals before.

Cromwell beat Underwood 18-12 and Lanesboro stopped Goodridge 34-26 in the semis.

At 1 p.m. the Class A title game matches Barnesville with New Ulm Cathedral.

Cathedral is in its eighth tournament and Barnesville its fourth. Neither has ever won a championship.

Barnesville ousted Goodhue 49-30 and Cathedral defeated Minneota's defending champs 34-33 last weekend.

At 4 p.m. the Class AA championship pits Caledonia with Triton.

Triton is making its ninth tournament appearance with titles in 1994, 2000 and 2006. Caledonia is in the meet for the seventh time, winning in 1976, 2007 and 2008.

Triton shaded Eden Valley-Watkins 12-6 and Caledonia won over OTC 55-7 in the semifinals.

Friday concludes with the 5A final at 7 p.m. matching Wayzata with Rosemount.

Rosemount is making its eighth appearance winning its lone title in 1981.

Wayzata is in its 10th meet with championships in 2005 and 08.

Rosemount ended Brainerd's unbeaten year 28-14 while Wayzata eased past Mounds View 21-16.

Saturday games

Saturday's double-header starts at noon when Rochester Lourdes faces Holy Family for the 3A title.

It's the eighth appearance for Lourdes which won its only title in 1979. Holy Family is making its second try.

It upended DeLaSalle 35-29 in the semifinals. Lourdes ended Albany's year 22-7.

The finale starts at 3 p.m. when Totino Grace and Rogers clash for the 4A championship.

Totino, famed for its Snow Bowl semifinal win over Bemidji in 1978 at BSU, is the grandfather of the meet, making its 20th appearance with seven titles, including last year's.

Rogers, which ousted Bemidji in this year's quarterfinals 24-21, has appeared only once previously, wining the section last year.

Totino beat St. Thomas Academy 28-21 and Rogers stopped Mahtomedi 45-28 in the semifinals.
