Moorhead edges Bemidji VFW in district playoff slugfest

The Bemidji VFW baseball team saw its domination of the district field end Saturday afternoon as the Vets dropped a 10-9 decision to Moorhead in the winner's bracket semifinals of the district tournament in East Grand Forks.

The loss forced Bemidji to win three more games if it wants to claim the district title. The first was played Saturday evening against the winner of Saturday late-afternoon contest between East Grand Forks and Perham.

If the Vets won that game they will tangle with Moorhead again today at 1 p.m. and, hopefully, again at 3 p.m. Bemidji would have to defeat Moorhead twice to claim the title. Moorhead, however, will need only one victory today to be crowned the district champion.

Saturday afternoon the VFW forged a 3-0 lead after two innings and, after seeing Moorhead score six in the third, Bemidji regained temporary control with two in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Moorhead drew within 9-7 with a run in the sixth and completed its upset with three in the seventh.

Mason Bellew's single, Collin Leif's double and Trent Baker's single combined for a pair of runs in the opening stanza and Sam Dwyer walked and scored courtesy of an error in the second.

Moorhead's bats sounded in the upper third and when the dust settled Moorhead had six runs.

A walk, Nick Hovila's triple and a passed ball produced two Bemidji runs in the fourth and the Vets, behind RBI doubles by Hovila and Ryan Hirt plus singles by Dwyer and Leif, scored four in the fifth to regain the advantage.

The lead was not enough, however, as Moorhead scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Bemidji loaded the bases with two out in its half of the seventh but was unable to get the key hit.
