Rutledge hitting .452 to lead Legion offense
The Bemidji Legion baseball team compiled a .351 team batting average on way to a 20-12 overall record while its pitching staff posted a 4.39 ERA.
"Our team batting average was solid," said Legion coach Mike Fogelson.
"We also were solid defensively with 41 errors but our pitchers need to throw fewer balls and walk fewer batters if we hope to go long into the tournaments."
Among players with at least 15 plate appearances, Cody Rutledge leads the attack with a .452 average and joining him with a mark over .400 is Zach Solheim who is hitting at a .403 pace.
Hitting at least .300 are Cody Jenkins (.375), Collin Leif (.370), Booster Russ (.327), Mason Bellew (.327), Tyler Tatro (.316), Mitch Hendricks (.3540, Ryan Stevens (.355), Matt Hietala (.314) and Jeremiah Graves (.329).
Rutledge also is the team leader in hits (47), RBI (38) and doubles (10) and is second on the squad in runs (31) and home runs (3).
Tyler Follis, who was injured earlier this season and has handled most of the designated running duties, had scored 32 times to pace the Legion. He also has stolen a team-high 10 bases without getting caught. Rutledge has swiped seven in as many attempts.
Solheim's four home runs represent a team-high and he is tied with Leif in the triples lead with three. Leif also is second in hits with 40 while Bellew is second in RBI with 28.
Graves has seven sacrifices to lead the club and Hietala is second with six.
Stevens, Kris Berndt and Matt Schneider each own a 3-1 pitching record and Stevens' 2.78 ERA is the best on the staff.
Rutledge (2-1) has a 3.13 ERA and Berndt has fashioned a 3.14 mark. Schneider has worked 31.2 innings while Berndt has pitched 29.0 innings, Solheim 28.7, Graves 23.1 and Stevens 22.2. Solheim has 23 strikeouts, Stevens 22 and Graves 20.
Collectively the staff has fanned 137 while walking 119.
