Hendricks, Leif lead Legion sweep over Roseau

The Fourth of July holiday break is over and the Bemidji Legion baseball team returned to action Tuesday with a sweep at Roseau.

That doubleheader began a busy final week of the regular season which includes today's twinbill at Brainerd plus a weekend trip to the Gopher Classic.

"We had four days off and everybody came back ready to play baseball," said Legion coach Mike Fogelson. "We played very well Tuesday at Roseau."

Bemidji improved to 18-8 by sweeping Roseau 8-2 and 12-2. Mitch Hendricks had three hits to lead the attack in the first game and Collin Leif belted three hits in the nightcap.

Matt Schneider went the route on the Bemidji mound in the 8-2 victory, fanning eight and walking one. His offensive mates scored all the runs he would need in the 3-run second inning and two runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh cemented the win.

A walk to Tyler Tatro set up the second-inning rally and he promptly scored when Zach Solheim's bunt was misplayed. Solheim scored courtesy of a passed ball and, after Jeremiah Graves walked and Kris Berndt reached on a fielder's choice, Hendricks doubled home the third run of the frame.

A walk to Graves, Berndt's single, an error and Hendricks' single combined for two runs in the fourth. The Legion iced the win with three in the seventh as Hendricks singled, Cody Rutledge doubled, Tatro singled in both runners and an error following Solheim's single plated Tatro.

Bemidji wasted no time in taking control of the rematch as the Legion scored one in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Collin Leif's single, a walk to Mason Bellew and an error on a double-steal produced the game's initial run.

In the second stanza Booster Russ reached on a passed ball, Ryan Stevens singled, Graves plated Russ with a bunt and Hendricks singled in Stevens.

Hendricks and Leif had RBI singles in the fourth but the big blow was Rutledge's 3-run round-tripper to left.

The Legion set the stage for a 10-run victory with four in the fifth as Solheim and Russ walked, Graves delivered an RBI single, Dom Hayle blasted a 2-run triple and Leif singled in Hayle.

Graves earned the pitching victory with four innings of work. Stevens retired Roseau without incident in the fifth.
