VFW baseball team finally plays at home
The Bemidji VFW baseball team will finally begin its home schedule at noon today when it hosts East Grand Forks in a doubleheader at the Bemidji State University diamond.
The Vets were scheduled to entertain Fergus Falls on June 17 but those games were victims of the weather. Consequently, after 10 road contests the VFW finally will play a home game.
Today's action was originally set for a 2 p.m. start but has been moved to noon because the Legion also is home today.
Bemidji will take a 7-3 record into today's play and is coming off a 1-3 performance at last weekend's tournament in Grand Forks. The majority of teams in that field, however, consisted of Legion-age players.
At Grand Forks the Vets dropped their opener, losing to Winnipeg 9-7 in a game limited to six innings because of time restraints.
Bemidji's second game went eight innings and the VFW eventually lost 6-5 to Beulah, N.D.
In Sunday's action Bemidji had a rematch with Beulah and, once again, came up short, losing 9-6.
The Vets salvaged a victory in their final start, edging Mandan 3-1. Cody Labernick and Drew Peterson combined on a 2-hitter while Bemidji's offense produce four.
Defensively the VFW turned three double-plays in the first three innings which kept Mandan at bay long enough for the offense to take control.
