Blue Ox sweep pair from Roseau
The Bemidji Blue Ox moved out of the Northwest Border League cellar Sunday, sweeping a double header from Roseau 7-6 and 8-7 at the BSU diamond.
It lifted the Blue Ox to 2-2, trailing Warroad at 2 -0. Roseau dropped to 0-2 in the three-team circuit.
Bemidji must still face both opponents in double headers, Roseau on the road.
Both games were nail biters with the Blue Ox tying the opener in the last of the seventh and winning in the first extra inning.
It took the nightcap on a two-out single in the last of the seventh.
Neither game was well played with Bemidji surviving a near disaster with its second game comeback.
Roseau jumped to a 5-1 lead in the third inning of the opener, scoring once in the first and second and three in the third, all but one unearned.
Bemidji had scored in the second on Joel Conway's single, a walk, error and a bases loaded walk to Sol Schneider.
But the Ox rallied for four runs in the fifth to knot the score.
Brian Jamieson singled and Duane Beihn walked. Conway scored both with a booming triple to left center and scored on a ground out.
Jesse Jacobson and Ryan Sullivan were then hit by a pitch and Schneider walked. A third hit batter sent home the tying run.
But Jamieson hit a comebacker to leave the bases loaded.
Cody Gross, making his season debut, worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings.
But two singles around a walk sent the visitors to a 6-5 lead in the sixth.
Bemidji tied it in the seventh when Josh Kelsey doubled, stole third and scored on an errant pickoff attempt.
Tyler Orgon, who had worked the entire game, left in the seventh after Duane Beihn singled and Conway became the fifth hit batter of the game.
Kurt Weston relieved to wild pitch the runners to second and third.
He fanned Landon Harris but the third strike got loose as Beihn scored.
Conway had three of the nine Blue Ox hits Orgon had three for the losers.
Jamieson, who came on to pitch the seventh, got the win, his first in two decisions,
The three Blue Ox hurlers fanned six and walked three.
Orgon, son of Bemidji native Howie Orgon, had one strikeout and seven walks. He also had six wild pitches.
The second game, while exiting, was one the Blue Ox would just as soon like to forget.
For the winners worked around eight errors which staked Roseau to five unearned runs.
Jamieson, who had retired the side in order to close the opener, yielded four hits in the first inning to stake Roseau to a 2-0 lead.
After that, he worked the next five frames allowing only one hit and was leading 7-6.
But Roseau tied the score in the seventh against Matt Fossen on an unearned run only to see the Ox win in their final turn at bat.
Bemidji had taken a 4-2 lead in the first when two walks and a hit batter filled the bases against Weston. A wild pitch scored one, Joel Conway singled in another and Chris Conway's double sent home two more.
But the Blue Ox defense collapsed in the second, committing four errors which, coupled with one single by T. J. Erickson, produced four unearned runs and a 6-4 lead.
The Ox got one back in the third on two-out hits by Chris Conway and Nick Lee an d went ahead with a pair in the fourth on a walk, Jamieson's double and two wild pitches.
Erickson came on to get the final out and blanked Bemidji until the seventh.
Bemidji took the 7-6 lead to the top of the frame when Voll reached on a dropped fly ball, stole second, reached third on a ground out and scored on another.
Erickson got the first two batters in the last of the frame before walking Lee. He advanced on a wild pickoff attempt and scored on Ryan Sullivan's drive to deep left center that plated the winning run.
Bemidji had only seven hits, two by Chris Conway, but profited by eight walks, two hit batters and five wild pitches.
Roseau had only six safeties, two by Weston. Jamieson and Fossen fanned six and walked none. Fossen's win was his first,
The sweep lifted the Blue Ox to 3-5. They host Crookston in a twin bill June 27.
