Mudcats second, Blue Ox third at Rosco Invitational

The Ada A's took the lead at the outset and went on to hand the Bemidji Mudcats a 7-2 setback in the title round of the 10th annual Rosco Invitational Sunday.

The Blue Ox turned back the Bayside Vipers of Superior 6-2 to take third.

The Cats host Grand Rapids Wednesday to resume Arrowhead League play and entertain the Blue Ox Friday in the second of their best-of-three series.

Side-arming right-hander Jameson Benson held the Cats at bay in the title game spacing six singles.

Both runs came in the second when the A's committed three errors to follow Jeff Schaper's single and tie the score briefly at 2-2.

Doug Peterson struggled with his control, leaving after four innings throwing 94 pitches and yielding nine hits and six runs.

Three singles scored a run in the first and a two-out double and single made it 2-0 in the second.

After the Cats tied, Ada ran home three in the third on three hits, a walk and hit batter and another in the fourth, also with two gone on two singles around a walk.

The final run came off Paul Fenner in the fifth on a hit batter, wild pitch and single.

Neil Huewe and Schaper had two hits for the Mudcats.

The Cats dropped to 9-2.

Blue Ox win

Ryan Sullivan made an unexpected start and held the Vipers to eight hits in going the route in the Blue Ox win.

In his first start since his high school days, he experienced early game control problems but grew stronger as the game wore along.

A walk, wild pitch and error gave the Vipers an unearned run in the first.

The Ox answered with four on hits by Josh Kelsey, Marty McSharry and Bryan Jamieson aided by two errors and two wild pitches.

They scored again in the fourth on an error, wild pitch and sacrifice fly and another in the fifth on hits by McSharry, Chris Conway and Duane Beihn.

McSharry had two of the six Blue Ox hits.

Fantastic Finish

The Mudcats then staged a fantastic finish to overcome Bay City in a game where they trailed much of the way.

Kyle Figgins' single to right capped the six-run seventh to send home the winning run.

Bemidji led briefly in the first, scoring on hits by Klaers and Schaper around a walk.

But the Vipers went ahead with three in the third against Brian Murphy.

Two singles around a walk filled the bases with no outs and all three scored on a wild pitch, single and groundout.

The Cats tied at 3-3 in the fourth, scoring twice on hits by Doug Peterson, Andrew Hengel and Bauer.

Murphy had retired 11 straight batters before the Vipers rallied with two out in the fifth, scoring twice on two walks and a single and double.

Bemidji cut the margin to 5-4 in the sixth on hits by Simon Anderson and Bauer.

But the visitors seemed to put the game beyond reach in the top of the seventh with four runs.

Murphy left after a single and hit batter.

Stasch came on again in relief and this time was unable to close the door.

He wild pitched in one run and three walks around a single made it 9-4.

But the best was yet to come.

Figgins drilled a single through first to open the frame and two walks filled the bases, ending the stay of starter Don Vasquez.

Lefty Marcus Besonen relieved and proved no relief.

He walked in two runs and another scored as Bauer reached on an error.

A sacrifice fly plated the fourth and the tying run crossed on a wild pitch.

After Nolan walked, Figgins drilled his second hit of the frame to win the game.

Bauer, Klaers, and Figgins had two hits in the 10-hit Bemidji attack. Stasch picked up the win, his first.
