The Bemidji girls golf team are not favored to win the Section 8AAA team title today and Friday but BHS coach Jeff Nelson believes that the Lumberjacks could make an impact in the individual portion of the tournament.

"The top team and the top six individuals not on the winning team advance to state and I think we have a shot at some of those spots," Nelson said.

Long Prairie is the site of the 36-hole tournament and the Jacks have been honing their skills to counter the quirks of the course.

"The course is long and demanding," Nelson said. "It also has some character around the greens so we've concentrated in practice on our chipping. And, we look pretty good."

Section 8AAA includes 12 teams but after today's round the field will be trimmed to the top four teams and any squad within 15 shots of the leader. Individually, the cut is the top six golfers who are not on the top four teams.

"We're probably not a favorite but we should have some players who will qualify for the second day," Nelson said.

Representing the Lumberjacks will be Meg Phelps, Shelby Sauer, Emily Frosaker, Amy Frosaker, Katelin Craft and Aimee Sandquist.

"Our goal is to stay away from the big numbers and play consistent golf," Nelson said. "We need to play every shot and never give up on a hole. If we do that the scoring will take care of itself."
