Bemidji HS softball season comes to an end

The season ended for the Bemidji softball team Wednesday as the Lumberjacks dropped a 2-1 decision to Big Lake in the loser's bracket final of the Section 8AAA tournament.

Brainerd eventually claimed the title and its reward, a state tournament berth, by downing Big Lake 3-0.

BHS (17-6) played much better than it did Monday when the defense committed nine errors in the 4-3 loss to Big Lake.

"It was a good game," Jacks coach Brad Takkunen said. "We reduced our strikeouts to six and cut our errors from nine to three. But we made a key error in the sixth inning that hurt us."

With the score knotted 1-1 Big Lake used a pair of singles to put runners at first and second with one out. A fielder's choice at second resulted in the second out but when the Big Lake runner at third bluffed going to home the BHS defense reacted with a throw to the plate.

Unfortunately, the throw was wild and the runner scored what proved to be the winning run.

Bemidji took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when pinch runner Janie Johnson scored from third when Emily Larson hit into a fielder's choice.

Big Lake evened the score in the fifth on a double, passed ball and single.

After Big Lake took the 2-1 lead in the sixth the Jacks threatened in the seventh.

Taylor McLean singled with one out and Summer Monsrud followed with a bunt single. After Monsrud was forced at second Jineane Williams singled to load the bases but Big Lake escaped damage when Yost ripped a shot down the third base line that the defense turned into a force at the bag.

Yost was the losing pitcher. She struck out six and walked no one.
