Bemidji HS boys golf trio off to good start at section meet

Trey Dale, Joe Welle and Rylee Curb put themselves into a position to qualify for the state meet as individuals after placing among the leaders at Wednesday's section meet in Sauk Centre.

In order to advance to state a golfer must place in the top five among the competitors not on the state tournament team qualifier. That team will be either Moorhead or Alexandria as the Spuds shot 295 Wednesday and the Cardinals 299.

A distant third was Brainerd at 318. The top six teams in the 12-team field will continue play today and completing that field will be Fergus Falls (319), Tech (320) and Buffalo (323).

Bemidji shot 325 and placed seventh. The Lumberjacks will not be competing in the team tournament today.

Dale, Welle and Curb will be in the hunt for individual honors, however. Dale shot 77 Wednesday while Welle carded an 81 and Curb an 82. The field was cut to the top 12 individuals not on the top six teams after Wednesday's play and Dale, Welle and Curb made the cut.

Missing the individual cut were Max Hazelton with an 85, Kevin Larson with an 87 and Elliot Leinen with an 88.

"I wasn't disappointed in the players but I was disappointed with our scores," said BHS coach Eric Niskanen. "I certainly was hoping for better. I know they are capable of scoring better.

"I am excited about the three individuals who qualified for Thursday's play," the coach continued. "I am excited to follow the prospects of sending someone to state."
