Bemidji High School softball: Jacks stay alive with 2-1 victory

After a 9-error disaster against Big Lake in Monday's 4-3 8AAA semifinal loss, the Bemidji High School softball team rebounded to shade Elk River 2-1 in the loser's bracket and remain alive in the section tournament.

The win over Elk River vaulted the Lumberjacks into Wednesday's championship series. BHS will have a rematch with Big Lake at 4 p.m. as, after nipping Bemidji, Big Lake lost 1-0 to Brainerd.

The Bemidji-Big Lake loser will be eliminated, but the winner will survive to play Brainerd at 6 p.m. If a rematch is necessary, it will be played Thursday.

"It was like a Charley Brown baseball game," BHS coach Brad Takkunen said of the 9-error fiasco against Big Lake. "We were throwing the ball around everywhere."

Big Lake, which was seeded second in the four-team semifinal field, took advantage of wild Bemidji throws to score single runs in the third and fifth and tallied two in the sixth.

BHS used Erika Weimann's single, a groundout by Jineane Williams and an error to score a run in the upper sixth and the Jacks made things interesting with two in the seventh.

Janie Johnson opened the seventh with a single and Summer Monsrud followed with a bunt single. A walk to Weimann loaded the bases and two runners scored with Jineane Williams' line drive was booted.

Bemidji eventually loaded the bases with two out but Big Lake worked out of the jam.

Yost took the mound loss despite yielding only four hits and two walks while fanning seven.

Bemidji's defense played much better against Elk River as the Lumberjacks committed only one error behind Yost's pitching.

"We had to make the plays because Jess had only one strikeout and Elk River kept putting the ball into play," Takkunen said.

"This game was a very good bounce-back performance."

BHS scored its two runs in the lower fifth. With two out Jineane Williams and Yost walked and a run scored when Janelle Williams' grounder was booted. Emily Larson followed with a bunt single which plated Yost.

Elk River scored its run in the seventh on a walk, two groundouts and an error. But Yost enticed a ground ball for the final out.
