High School baseball: Unbeaten Panthers closing in on crown

The unbeaten Cass Lake-Bena Panthers moved another step closer to nailing down the Northland Conference Southern Division title Friday, scoring a 12-0 five-inning win over second place Pine River on the loser's diamond.

CL-B had taken the first meeting 10-0 at home.

The win lifted Ken Wittner's Panthers to 16-0 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Pine River dropped to 13-2 and 7-2 in the conference.

The Panthers hosted Kelliher-Northome Monday and play at Nevis today before facing WHA in a makeup Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Tyler Trosen set down the Tigers on four hits in winning his sixth game.

He struck out six and walked only one.

The winners broke open the game with a seven-run fifth to end the contest early.

Six players had two hits with Caleb Fisher belting a home run and double, Nolan Goss a homer with Taylor Humphrey getting a double and single and Chad Wittner, Trosen and Mike Masten two singles.

Fisher's one-out home run in the second proved the only run Trosen would need.

His two-bagger followed three singles in the third and he scored on Masten's hit.

A walk, error, two singles, Humphrey's double and Goss' home run featured the big fifth.
