Bemidji natives Dan Bauer and Doug Peterson were the heroes for the Bemidji State baseball team in Wednesday's doubleheader sweep over U-Mary at BSU Baseball Field.

The Beavers won the first game 10-5 behind Peterson's grand slam and won the second game 7-3 behind Bauer's career-best 15 strikeouts.

It made for a good sendoff for the Josh Silvernagel and Dan Bennett, the two seniors honored on Senior Day.

Peterson also homered in the second game to rack up a total of seven RBI in the doubleheader. The sweep ended Bemidji State's home season and put a close to a six-game losing streak.

Pitching, hitting and fielding finally came together as one for Bemidji State in the doubleheader. The Beavers produced 12 hits in game one and 11 hits in game two to establish double-digits hits in a doubleheader for the first time this conference season.

The BSU pitching staff combined for 23 strikeouts and issued just 10 walks.

In the first game, BSU rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and score 10 unanswered runs to take the win. The Beavers scored three runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Peterson's grand slam scored all four runs in the fifth inning.

Freshman Ryan Van Someren made his first start on the mound for BSU. He threw five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. Sophomore Ethan Branum pitched the final four innings to earn his second save of the season.

Reed Sander, Colton Smith, Nick Jelacie and Matt Ellinhuysen each had a pair of hits for BSU.

The second game came down to Bauer and a five-run third inning for BSU. Bauer's only mistakes came on solo home runs in the second, third and fourth innings. He faced 15 batters through four innings and struck out 10.

Peterson's two-run home run came in the third inning. Peterson entered the doubleheader with two home runs and five RBI on the season.

Chad Hanson, Jelacie and Smith each had a pair of hits in the game.

Up next for the BSU is a four-game series Saturday and Sunday at Concordia-St. Paul.
