Bemidji HS softball: Williams' hit sparks Jacks win

Jineane Williams ripped a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to power the Bemidji softball team to a 3-1 victory over Tartan Saturday in the second game of the Lumberjacks' day in the Twin Cities.

Saturday morning BHS lost 7-0 at Mounds View.

"We played very poorly against Mounds View and the kids did not feel good about their performance," said Bemidji coach Brad Takkunen. "But in the afternoon game against Tartan the girls responded and played very well.

"We faced some very good teams this weekend in Chaska (a 7-6 loss on Friday), Mounds View and Tartan. We saw quality pitching and we learned more about ourselves and our abilities," the coach added.

In Saturday's nightcap Bemidji took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Janelle Williams singled, Erika Weimann bunted her to second and Jineane Williams singled her home.

Tartan tied the score in the sixth on three singles and the 1-1 deadlock continued until the eighth.

Janelle Williams opened the eighth with a double and Weimann followed with a single. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and set the table for Jineane Williams' 2-run single.

Tartan opened its eighth inning with a single but the runner was retired on a double play.

Janelle Williams and Jess Yost each ripped three hits for the Jacks. Yost also went the distance on the mound and earned the victory. She allowed eight hits and struck out two.

Earlier Saturday Bemidji struggled against Mounds View, managing only a pair of hits by Jineane Williams.

Saturday's split gave Bemidji a 4-2 record. The Jacks return to action Tuesday when they entertain Moorhead.
