The Bemidji boys tennis team split a pair of home matches Thursday, falling to Grand Rapids 5-2 and thumping Park Rapids 6-1.

Grand Rapids defeated Park Rapids 7-0.

"As a coach you always decide on how you best can get four points and against Grand Rapids I thought a strong singles lineup would be our best chance," said BHS coach Scott Englestad.

"We won two of the singles matches and lost the other two in three-set tiebreakers. And those matches determined the team win."

Kyle Fodness at third singles and Justin Byers at fourth singles posted Bemidji's victories. Fodness downed Brice Becker 7-5, 6-4 and Byers stopped Grus Fedji-Johnston 6-1, 7-5.

Ad first singles Ben Holter fell 6-2, 5-7, (7-4) to Jared Sherman while Adam Holter lost 6-1, 3-6, (7-5) to Conor Hoolihan at second.

"We didn't start out very well at first or second singles," Engelstad said. "I thought we were tentative at the start of each match but we played better in the second sets and the tiebreakers."

BHS dropped all three doubles matches in straight sets. Ben Kloha and Levi Rickert lost 6-3, 6-2 to Charlie Roy and Logan Tater, Alex Hess and Kyle Edens fell 6-1, 6-1 to Ryan Dunn and Evan Peterson, and Hayden Byers and Jack Boyer lost 6-4, 6-1 to Eric and Austin Stefanich.

"Grand Rapids had more depth than we did but on a different day we might have won the four singles spots," Engelstad said.

The Lumberjacks had no trouble disposing of Park Rapids as the lone loss came at first singles where Ben Holter saw Alex Renner rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), (7-3) victory.

Adam Holter won his match 6-1, 6-1, Fodness coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph and Justin Byers posted a 6-0, 6-1 win.

In doubles, Kloha and Rickert won 6-4, 6-2, Hess and Edens were 6-2, 6-4 winners and Hayden Byers and Boyer prevailed 6-1, 6-3.

BHS, 2-2, returns to action Thursday when it hosts East Grand Forks. The Lumberjacks will also entertain Brainerd on April 23.
