Area hockey supporters will begin a new tradition today - Hockey Day in Bemidji.

The Bemidji High School and Bemidji State University game schedules mean fans can cheer at every game.

Matt Menne, the BHS girls' varsity hockey coach, said the lineup all day is Lumberjacks versus Alexandria Cardinals in the Nymore Arena.

The BHS varsity girls will play at noon, the boys' junior varsity at 2 p.m. and the boys' varsity at 4 p.m. That will allow fans time for supper and to find their seats at the John Glas Fieldhouse for the men's hockey game between the BSU Beavers versus Robert Morris University Colonials. The game will start at 7:05 p.m.

"This is the first annual event, something we hope to build on in the future," said Menne.

Bemidji Youth Hockey is also looking at a full day of Peewee B games today, Jan. 30, at the Neilsen-Reise, Nymore and Bemidji Community arenas. Players at all levels from Bemidji and visiting teams began the three-day tournament Friday afternoon and will conclude with playoffs Sunday, Jan. 31.

Tracy Pogue, BYH president, said the organization gives youngsters ages 5-15 the opportunity to play hockey. BYH now consists of 214 boys and 57 girls, more than 50 certified coaches and hundreds of volunteers.
