Bemidji High School athletics: Weather knocks out full scchedule

The weatherman did what no high school was likely to do Saturday, wiping out the entire nine event Bemidji High athletic program for the day.

It marled the second time in three Saturdays that all nine Bemidji teams were listed to play.

On Jan., 9 all nine completed their assignments.

On Jan .23, none got started.

The treacherous road conditions occasioned by the all night freezing rain, made driving dangerous and took busses off the road.

Gone were four major tournaments including the Bemidji High Nordic Ski meet at  Buena Vista,.

Also cancelled were the Apollo gymnastics meet at St. Cloud, the Thief River Falls wrestling invitational at Ralph Engelstad Arena and the True Team section meet at Detroit Lakes.,

Both hockey and both basketball teams were also wiped out.

The boys hockey team had been listed to host Roseau in a key Section 8AA and Mariucci Conference test at Nymore Gardens with the girls at Brainerd.

Both basketball teams were listed for a double header at Sauk Rapids.

No immediate information was available on rescheduling.

The 3A True Team swim meet will likely be rescheduled, probably for next Saturday.

The ski meet could be reset for this weekend with the five Section 8 teams scheduled to compete using the affair for a final warm up for the sectional at Camp Ripley Feb. 3.

The wrestling tourney, with 15 teams involved, is a remote possibility to be reset. The gym meet also may not be held.

The hockey teams will likely reset their games with two and three weeks of regular season play remaining.

The basketball twin bill is less likely. Bemidji and the Central Lakes teams play their contests on Saturdays. The Bemidji boys are scheduled on every Saturday except Jan. 30. The girls have games listed for all of their upcoming Saturdays.

Both local teams had been heavy favorites over the struggling Storm.

Most of the teams will be in action Tuesday.

The boys basketball team hosts Deer River while the girls hockey team entertains Grand Rapids at BS U.

The wrestlers face a stern test at state ranked BGMR while the swimmers are home with Detroit Lakes in what could be a close battle.

The skiers head to Brainerd for the North Star Conference meet, one that draws only a small field each year.

And the gymnasts make a trip to Perham to take on the state's top ranked Class A team, one that has topped the 150 point mark this winter.

Five more events are set Thursday with the boys cagers hosting Cloquet the boys hockey team at Hermantown and the girls at Detroit Lakes while the wrestlers are at the Alexandria triangular with Bertha-Hewitt as the third team and the swimmers entertain Moorhead.
