Bemidji State Track and Field: Beavers shine at Super 8 meet

The Bemidji State track and field teams wrapped up the two-day Super 8 meet Saturday afternoon at Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center with a number of notable performances.

Junior Kristi Buerkle won the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash and anchored the 4x400 meter relay team to a second-place finish.

Buerkle's 400 time of 57.61 seconds ranks her fifth in NCAA Divison II and her 200 time of 25.92 seconds ranks her 13th in Division II.

Buerkle competed in the NCAA championships last season.

Senior Zac Preble participated in the heptathalon but chose not compete in the final event. He is currently ranked the No. 1 in the NCAA heptathlon. He participated in the NCAA championships last season.

Freshman Tandy Juell competed in the heptathlon and he is ranked No. 15 in the NCAA.

BSU turned in a strong meet in the weight events.

Senior Missy Graber was the women's champion in the weight throw with a distance of 46-04.00.

BSU freshman football player Brian Leonhardt was the men's shot put champion with a distance of 47-11.00.

Kyle Christianson edged out Leonhardt for the men's weight throw championship with a distance of 50-10.25.

Former BSU football player and senior Tiger Ellison won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.57 seconds.

Freshman Mark Buerkle, Kristi's younger brother, was the champion in the 400 with a time of 52.76 seconds.

The men's 4x200 relay team of Buerkle, Beau Wakefield, Sam Bofferding and Raph Gelo took championship honors with a time of 1.36:43.

St. Cloud State's Heather Miller had a pair of notable performances at the Super 8. She moved into the No. 1 ranking in the pentathlon and No. 3 in the triple jump with a distance of 38-10.50.

The meet was open to unattached runners and Lakeville South eighth grader Shaina Burns had a memorable meet.

She placed in the pentathlon, hurdles, 200 meter dash and won the high jump with a 1.55 meters.

No team totals were totaled at the meet.

Participating teams were Bemidji State, Minnesota-Duluth, St. Scholastica, Jamestown College, Wisconsin-Superior and St. Cloud State.
